Duffy by Irving Townsend

"Duffy, thy name is Dog. You are all dogs, every dog. Irving Townsend, they name is blessed because you knew Duffy so well, and you have shared him with us so well. What a coming together this is!"
-Roger Caras

When Duffy discovers a hole under the fence of a neighboring ranch, he decides to take the plunge and investigate another world. His decision proves dangerous as he finds himself in a tangle of humans, some well-meaning, some not. His struggle to find his home again is reminiscent of The Incredible Journey, and Townsend's wonderful writing is surely classic. This is a fine book for adults and older children.

Gray Dawn by Albert Payson Terhune

Born under the most adverse of conditions, outdoors during an ice storm, he was the only surviving collie puppy from a litter of nine, sired by Bruce of Sunnybank. He was also the only blue merle, a color combination not favored by the Master. But his wife, the Mistress, has always wanted a blue merle as one of the Places house dogs. It is decided that she will keep him as her own, and she takes it upon herself to give the puppy a name.

"Another of those always interesting and entertaining Sunnybank collies is the central figure in Mr. Terhunes new book. It is by far the best dog story that Mr. Terhune has yet written."
-- The New York Times (1927, upon original publication).

Albert Payson Terhune was the most prolific writer of dog stories in the first half of the twentieth century, producing over sixty books (half of them about the Sunnybank collies, the most famous of which was Lad) and hundreds of magazine and newspaper stories.

The foreword is written by Wayne Lewis.  Wayne is district director of the American Working Collie Association for southern US, a member of the Collie Club of America and of the Collie Club of America Foundation. He maintains a website devoted to Albert Payson Terhune and is founder and list moderator for DogLit-H, an electronic listserve devoted to dogs in literature. He is professor of mathematics at Texas Tech University. And a member of New Mexico Collie Rescue!
